Ieud: Farming Fields Ieud: People in the Maramureş region have a unique way of drying hay, storing it in mounds instead of bales. Ieud Ieud: This region has been compartively untouched by modernity.  It escaped the collectivisation of the 1940s.  Peasants still make their living off the land. Ieud: Horsecarts outnumbered cars in Ieud, which was first documented in 1365 Ieud: The Road (and I really mean THE road). Ieud: Famous for wooden churches like this newer one.  Ieud is in the Maramureş region of Romania.  We took quite a bus ride to get here! Baia Mare: The "View" out our window.  From here, we caught an early morning bus to Ieud. Baia Mare: Instead of the cute little guesthouse we had reserved in Ieud, we had to stay one night here.  We arrived around 1:30 a.m. with no reservation; someone at the train station recommended it and we caught a few hours of sleep. View from Train Ieud: Hay drying Ieud: Sunday morning - virtually everyone was on his/her way to church.  Some in traditional dress, some in a mix of modern and traditional.  One woman had on Chuck Taylors. Ieud: Liviu & Maria's cat - Very friendly! It was reached by climbing the 175 steps of the covered wooden Scholars' stairs of 1642. Braşov: Sport Complex Bucharest: Memorial of Rebirth commemorates the struggles and victims of the 1989 Revolution, which claimed about 1500 lives and overthrew Nicolae Ceauşescu.  25 m. high with metal "crown" Transylvania: We hiked up to Râşnov Fortress (seen here in the distance) with an American woman who works in Antarctica. Bucharest: The shell of a building that housed the hated Securitate & was destroyed by protestors in the 1989 Revolution.  The glass structure inside was built by & houses the HQ of the Romanian Architecture Union and dates from 2003. Transylvania: Vlad himself probably never set food in this castle. Bucharest: Muzuel Satului (Village Museum) - Gate that resembled ones we saw in Ieud (because it was from Ieud!)
